Safe Space Scheme

Are you a business who wants to help your local community?

Sometimes a person can feel vulnerable whilst being away from their home environment and so by displaying this sticker, you act as a point of contact for that person if they need support whilst they are out in your community.

STAFF RESPONSIBILTY

  • Display the sticker in your window.
  • Support a person who may feel scared, unwell, confused, lost or have been a victim of crime, by providing them with a welcoming safe environment.
  • Contact either an emergency service, family member or a friend of the person.
  • Look after the person whilst you wait for further assistance by providing a private area for them to stay calm.
  • If possible, a hot or cold drink could be provided.
  • Please allow access to your toilets, people sometimes feel very vulnerable when using public toilets.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Good practice would be to have two members of staff to help the person.
  • If a person has asked for help and needs to use the phone, this needs to be in a publicly accessible area or via a cordless phone. Try not to use the personal phones of staff.
  • If you have any immediate safeguarding concerns, contact your local social care team or Kent Police.
  • If there is a crime in progress or a person is in immediate danger, phone 999.

In October 2024, the BBC and Meridian news followed this scheme starting in Dover!
